PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Marvin Burroughs passed for 274 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for a career-high 93 yards, as Villanova defeated Penn 27-20 Saturday night in a game that saw all the scoring come in the first half.

DeQuese May caught four passes for 99 yards and two touchdowns for Villanova (1-3). Joe Sandberg ran for 94 yards, including a 74-yard touchdown run, for Penn (1-1).

The Quakers had a chance to win the game late when they drove from their own 32-yard line to the Villanova 10-yard line with 21 seconds remaining. After an incomplete pass, Bryan Walker ran to the 7-yard line with nine seconds left but two final passes in the last six seconds fell incomplete.

The game was reminiscent of last year's 28-24 Villanova victory, when the Quakers drove inside the 5-yard line but failed to score on the final play of the game.

Burroughs passed for 235 yards and all three touchdowns in the first half, including a 57-yard strike to Chris Polite. Burroughs' 17-yard toss to May with 1:53 left in the half gave the Wildcats their 27-20 advantage.

Penn had tied the score at 20-20 on Sandberg's run with 6:30 left in the second quarter. Penn's first-half attack also featured a 60-yard punt return by Greg Ambrogi and a 26-yard halfback pass from Sandberg to Kelms Amoo-Achampong for a touchdown.

Villanova now leads the all-time series with its local rival 6-5. The Wildcats have won all six games since the series was renewed in 1980. The Quakers' last win was in 1911.
