Villanova/Penn Post-Game Notes
Sept. 20, 2009
Villanova leads the all-time series against Penn by a 9-5 margin. All five of the wins for the Quakers came between 1905 and 1911; the Wildcats have won nine matchups in a row since 1980. Tonight marked the sixth straight year that the Philly rivals have played each other and the seventh time in the last eight years.
In two of the past three seasons, Villanova defeated Penn on the final play of the game. The Wildcats average margin of victory in its nine wins is 13.8 points, though the figure is only 8.5 points over the last six years and 6.2 points in the last five meetings at Franklin Field.
Under head coach Andy Talley, the Wildcats are 11-0 all-time against teams from the Ivy League. Villanova has won nine matchups against Penn and two games against Columbia since Talley came to the Main Line.
Junior wide receiver/return man Matt Szczur (Erma, N.J.) now has two career kickoff returns for a touchdown after his 87-yard return for a score in tonight's game. Both of his return touchdowns have come on the first play of a game, as he also had a 91-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last year on November 29 against Colgate in the first round of the FCS Playoffs.
Junior linebacker Terence Thomas (Lawrenceville, N.J.) established a career-high with 10 total tackles in tonight's game. He had five solo stops and five assisted tackles. Thomas also had a career-high two sacks in the game, as Villanova brought down Penn quarterback Keiffer Garton six times.
Senior defensive back Ross Ventrone has seven career interceptions, including two this season.
