Robertson and Cherry Earn Walter Camp All-America Honors
Villanova University junior quarterback John Robertson (Paramus, N.J.) and junior linebacker Don Cherry (Trumbull, Conn.) have been named to the Walter Camp 2014 FCS All-America Team. The team was selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the FCS schools.
John Robertson Wins Walter Payton Award
Junior quarterback John Robertson (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) has won the Walter Payton Award given to the top player in FCS Football. He was presented with the award by Mickey Charles, CEO of the Sports Network at the annual FCS Awards Banquet at the Sheraton Society Hill in Philadelphia.
John Robertson Earns AFCA All-America Honors
Villanova junior quarterback John Robertson (Paramus, N.J.) was today named to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) 2014 FCS All-America Team. The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions.
Don Cherry Finishes Second For Buchanan Award
The Sports Network today announced the voting for the 2014 Buck Buchanan Award which is given to the top defensive player in FCS Football. Villanova junior linebacker Don Cherry (Trumbull, Conn.) finished second in the final voting with 253 points, including 13 first place votes.
Wildcats Edged by Sam Houston State, 34-31, in FCS Quarterfinal Round
A back-and-forth affair came down to the final play of the game and No. 6 seed Villanova (11-3) was ousted from the Division I Football Championship in a quarterfinal loss to Sam Houston State (11-4) at Villanova Stadium on Saturday afternoon. A touchdown by the Bearkats with 4:03 remaining lifted Sam Houston State to a 34-31 victory and ended the Wildcats terrific season.
Former Football Head Coach John Gregory Passes Away
Former Villanova football head coach John ("Jack") Gregory passed away in Philadelphia last week. Visitation will take place on Thursday, December 11 from 6-8 p.m. at the Maris Grove Chapel, 200 Maris Grove Way, Glen Mills, Pa. 19342. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, December 12 at 10 a.m. at St. Cornelius Catholic Church, 160 Ridge Road, Chadds Ford, Pa. 19317. Burial will be at the cemetery of Saints Peter and Paul, Sproul Road, Springfield, Pa.
Quarterfinal Matchup Pits Wildcats against Sam Houston State
Two teams that have never faced each other on the gridiron will compete in the quarterfinal round of the Division I Football Championship at Villanova Stadium, as No. 6 seed Villanova (11-2) hosts Sam Houston State (10-4) on Saturday afternoon. The game kicks off at 1 p.m. and can be seen live on ESPN3. The NCAA FCS Football Committee tonight announced that the No. 6 seed Villanova Wildcats (11-2 overall) will host the Sam Houston State Bearkats (10-4 overall) in the quarterfinal round of the FCS playoffs on Saturday, De. 13, at Villanova Stadium.
