Matt Colangelo is a newcomer on the Villanova coaching staff in 2017 and will be a defensive assistant for the Wildcats. He will also handle recruiting in the Atlanta area (Clayton, DeKalb, Gwinnett counties) and Eastern Georgia, as well as in Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.
Colangelo comes to Villanova after spending the 2016 season as a defensive assistant at Yale. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, Assumption, where he was an assistant coach for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. The Greyhounds won a combined 18 games during his two years on the staff, including an 11-2 season in 2015 when the team put together a 10-game winning streak and advanced to the second round of the NCAA playoffs.
A native of Cromwell, Conn., Colangelo played linebacker at Assumption and was a senior captain in 2013. He ranked third on the team with 69 tackles as a senior, and his stats for the season also included 5.5 tackles for loss, one fumble recovery, two interceptions, three quarterback hurries and one pass breakup. Colangelo was a Northeast-10 first team All-Conference choice in 2013 and was also named a Worcester Area first team All-Star. He was presented with the 2014 William A. Cating '64 Memorial Award as the "Most Coachable" male athlete at Assumption.
