Philadelphia native Kyle Lowry, who helped lead Villanova to a 52-8 record and appearances in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 and NCAA Tournament Elite Eight from 2004-06, has been named winner of the 2018 Philadelphia Sportswriters Association's "Native Son" award. The honor will be presented as part of the Association's banquet on Jan. 15 in Cherry Hill, N.J.
"The Native Son Award really means the world to me," said Lowry. "Being from Philadelphia is so much a part of who I am, and the courts I grew up on helped to make me the player I am today. To be recognized by the place where I grew up and still call home, is really special."
Lowry was drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round of the 2006 National Basketball Association draft. He is in his sixth season with the Toronto Raptors, where he is a two-time NBA All-Star. He also won an Olympic gold medal with the United States in 2016.
The 2018 Philadelphia Sports Writers Association Banquet will be held on Monday January 15th (MLK Day) at the Crowne Plaza Cherry Hill. Each ticket comes with a free beverage of the ticket buyer's choice. Cocktails at 5 p.m. and a dinner at 6.
