VILLANOVA, Pa. - With exam week behind them, the No. 8/12 Villanova Wildcats return to the hardwood on Saturday afternoon at the Pavilion for their final non-conference regular season home game of 2013-14. The Rider Broncs (5-4 overall, 0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) will be on campus for a contest that is slated to tip just after 4:00 p.m. (Fox Sports 1/990 WNTP Radio).
"As coaches, you are always concerned about this game," stated Villanova head coach Jay Wright. "We are coming off a tough week of exams and Christmas is right around the corner. We have to be ready for a good Rider team that is coming in here playing well."
The Broncs have won three straight and are led by 18.7 ppg scorer Anthony Miles. Rider averages 80.9 ppg and connects on .443 of its 3-point field goal attempts. In November, the Broncs gave Purdue a battle in an 81-77 defeat in West Lafayette, Ind., and have posted wins over Monmouth, Quinnipiac, and Wagner in their most recent action.
Villanova comes in off a 73-52 victory over La Salle. The Wildcats rank second in the BIG EAST in assists at 17.0 ppg (only Creighton averages more) and have recently received a boost from their reserves, led by guards Tony Chennault, Dylan Ennis, Josh Hart and forward Kris Jenkins. The VU bench outscored La Salle's reserves 29-15.
Saturday is also Villanova Basketball Alumni Day. Among those expected to be on hand are recent National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame inductee coach Rollie Massimino along with a host of other former Wildcat standouts. All of the former Wildcats will be recognized during a halftime ceremony.
