VILLANOVA, Pa. - A new season of college basketball begins this weekend and the Villanova Wildcats are part of the action as they open their 2012-13 slate with a pair of home games in the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project at the Pavilion.
On Friday night, the `Cats make their debut against UDC. The Firebirds are coached by former Philadelphia 76er Jeff Ruland and posted a 22-6 record a season ago. UDC was picked to finish second to LIU Post in the pre-season East Coast Conference pre-season poll.
"This is a very-well coached team that we have great respect for," stated Villanova head coach Jay Wright.
Friday's game will be web-streamed at Villanova.com through the Nova Nation All-Access Pass subscription. Scott Graham and Steve Pinone will describe the action. The contest can also be heard locally on Sportsradio 610 WIP with Ryan Fannon and Whitey Rigsby on the call.
There will be a quick turnaround as the Wildcats then host Marshall on Sunday afternoon at the Pavilion. The Thundering Herd return three starters from a unit that finished 21-14 last season as a member of Conference USA and received a bid to the National Invitation Tournament.
Sunday's game will be available on espn3.com with Dave Leno and John Celestand handling the call. Tip-off is set for 1:05 p.m.
"We're excited to begin this new journey," stated Wright.
Villanova returns three starters from its 2011-12 group, led by forwards Mouphtaou Yarou and JayVaughn Pinkston. Of the 14 Wildcats on the 2012-13 roster, seven were a part of last season's squad and seven are new to Villanova. Among the newcomers expected to make a significant contribution are guards Ryan Arcidiacono and Tony Chennault along with forward Daniel Ochefu.
The 2K Sports Classic action resumes on Thursday evening at Madison Square Garden, where the Wildcats meet Purdue at 9:30 p.m. (ESPN2).
