VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova will officially greet the 2008-09 men's and women's basketball seasons with its annual "Hoops Mania" on Friday evening in the Pavilion. A packed house is expected with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. and the event beginning at 7:30 p.m.
"One of the things our coaching staff loves about Hoops Mania," states Villanova head men's basketball coach Jay Wright, " is that it brings all segments of the Villanova community together to celebrate the start of the season - students, faculty, alumni and administrators."
Among the featured attractions are the introduction of the men's and women's teams; a series of promotional contests offering prizes to students; along with the annual Blue/White scrimmage. In addition, there has in each of the past two years been a special musical guest appear and that tradition is expected to continue in 2008. In 2006, 50 Cent made a surprise appearance to the delight of the crowd.
Former Wildcat greats will join current team members and coaches to help get the season started. In addition, members of the No. 7 Villanova football team will be on hand in advance of their critical CAA battle with No. 1 James Madison on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Villanova Stadium.
The event is effectively "sold out" with no tickets available at the door (tickets were free and distributed primarily through a student lottery). The entire night will be video streamed on villanova.com's "Nova Nation" All-Access pass.
Both the Villanova men's and women's teams open their 2008-09 regular seasons on Nov. 14 at the Pavilion. The women host La Salle followed by the men's team's contest against Albany at 8:00 p.m.
