VILLANOVA, Pa. - The 2011-12 men's and women's basketball teams welcomed the new season at a packed house on Friday night at the Pavilion at Hoops Mania 2011 presented by Advanced Staging Productions and the Campus Activity Team (CAT).
The evening began with the introduction of the Villanova football team, which hosts Old Dominion on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Villanova Stadium. A short while later, former Villanova basketball player Will Sheridan, who is now a recording artist, took to the stage to perform for the audience.
The Villanova women's basketball team was introduced to the cheers of the sellout throng and then came the Villanova men's team. The squad entered as a unit and worked alongside the Villanova ROTC in an on-court drill before donning their basketball togs.
Next came the introduction of notable former Wildcats, including NBA players Malik Allen and Dante Cunningham. There was a special salute to the 2006 BIG EAST champion Wildcats, who were represented on this night by Randy Foye, Allan Ray, Kyle Lowry, Baker Dunleavy, Mike Claxton and Sheridan.
Following a scrimmage won by the Blue team 37-21, the fans turned their focus to the stage for a performance by recording artist Drake, who only six nights earlier was the featured musical act on "Saturday Night Live." To conclude the show, VU head coach Jay Wright and the Pavilion crowd sang "happy birthday" to Drake.
"This was an amazing night and a great way for our teams to share the excitement of a new season with the Nova Nation," stated Jay Wright.
