VILLANOVA, Pa. - An 18 game round-robin slate of BIG EAST Conference games and an appearance in the Battle 4 Atlantis Thanksgiving weekend highlight the 2013-14 Villanova Men's Basketball schedule that was released today.
The Wildcats are part of the new-look BIG EAST that opens play on Dec. 31 with five games spread across two time zones, all to be televised nationally by the league's new television partner, Fox Sports 1. Villanova travels to Indianapolis that day for its first-ever appearance at Hinkle Field House to face the Butler Bulldogs in a contest that gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
Every one of Villanova's 31 regular-season games will be aired on a national network, including 20 on Fox Sports 1, two on CBS and four on CBS Sports Network.
The 2013-14 campaign begins on Friday, Nov. 8, when VU hosts Lafayette, coached by former Wildcat standout Fran O'Hanlon (class of 1970), at the Pavilion in a contest that tips at 8:00 p.m. and will be seen on Fox Sports 2. The Wildcats will make three more appearances on campus before facing USC on Thursday, Nov. 28, in the opening round of the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas. In the second round Villanova will face either Kansas or Wake Forest.
A full slate of Philadelphia Big Five action is on tap as well. The Wildcats host Penn on Dec. 4 at the Pavilion (8:00 p.m./Fox Sports 1) and visit Saint Joseph's on Dec. 7 (CBS Sports Network). La Salle comes to the Pavilion on Dec. 15 (2:30 p.m. on Fox Sports 1). Villanova then wraps up its Big Five portion of the schedule with a visit to the Liacouras Center to face Temple on Saturday, Feb. 1 (CBS Sports Network).
The Wildcats visit former conference rival Syracuse on Saturday, Dec. 28 in a game that will be televised nationally by CBS at 1:00 p.m.
Villanova will host four regular-season games and an exhibition contest (Nov. 2 against West Chester) at the Wells Fargo Center. A visit from BIG EAST newcomer Creighton opens the Wells Fargo portion of the regular-season slate on Jan. 20 (7:00 p.m./Fox Sports 1) with appearances by St. John's (Feb. 22/Fox Sports 1), Marquette (Mar. 2/CBS) and Georgetown (Mar. 8/Fox Sports 1) also on tap in South Philadelphia. Last season VU was a perfect 3-0 at the Center, posting wins over Top 5 ranked Louisville, Syracuse and Georgetown.
Xavier (Feb. 3) and Butler (Feb. 26) make their initial visits to the Pavilion as members of the BIG EAST in February. Other BIG EAST foes coming to the Wildcats' on-campus home will be Providence (Jan. 5), DePaul (Jan. 18), and Seton Hall (Feb. 7).
The BIG EAST Tournament returns to Madison Square Garden with opening round play on Wed., March 12 with the Championship set for Saturday, March 15.
