A day after winning the BIG EAST Tournament at Madison Square Garden, the Villanova men’s basketball team drew the No. 1 seed in the East Region on Selection Sunday and will face the winner of Tuesday’s NCAA first four game in Dayton. The Wildcats will play the winner of Mount St. Mary’s and New Orleans. This season for the first round of the East Region the Wildcats will play in Buffalo, New York at KeyBank Center. The teams will play on Thursday, March 16th with the time of the game still to be announced.
This marks the 37th appearance all-time for the Wildcats in the NCAA Tournament and third time they have earned the No. 1 seed. Villanova was previously a No. 1 seed in the Minneapolis Region in 2006 and in the East Region in 2015.
Villanova will play the winner of Mount St. Mary’s and New Orleans, both won their conference championship to earn an automatic-bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats are 10-1 all-time against the Mountaineers and 1-2 against the Privateer’s. Villanova last played both teams in the Pavilion, when they hosted Mount St. Mary’s in 2013 and New Orleans in 1997.
Entering the NCAA Tournament, Villanova carries a 31-3 overall record after going 15-3 during the regular season BIG EAST games and finishing first in the conference. The Wildcats went a perfect 13-0 in non-conference play, featuring wins over top-ranked programs such as Purdue, Notre Dame, and Virginia.
Villanova’s all-time record as a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament is 4-2 (.667). In 2006, the Wildcats went 3-1 with wins over #16 seed Monmouth, #8 seed Arizona and #4 seed Boston College before falling to #3 seed and eventual national champion Florida. In 2015, Villanova defeated #16 seed Lafayette in the opening round and fell to #8 seed North Carolina State in the second round.
