VILLANOVA, Pa. - James Bell's strong work on the court helped lead No. 6 Villanova to a pair of Pavilion victories last week and on Monday he was named BIG EAST and Philadelphia Big Five Player of the Week. It is the second BIG EAST Player of the Week nod for Bell (Orlando, Fla./Montverde Academy) this season and his third consecutive Big Five honor.
Bell has averaged 21.3 ppg in his last seven games and was outstanding in victories over Xavier and Seton Hall last week. On Feb. 3, the 6-5 swingman was 10-of-14 from the field en route to a 27-point, eight rebound effort in an 81-58 triumph over the Musketeers on a snowy night.
On Friday, Bell followed that up by converting 7-of-11 of his field goal attempts, including 4-of-7 from long range, in a 20-point, six carom effort against Seton Hall. The Wildcats went on to post a 70-53 victory over the Pirates.
Bell ranks ninth in the BIG EAST with a 16.0 ppg average and is 12th in rebounding at 5.8 rpg. But in the view of one noteworthy observer, the numbers are only a small part of the impact Bell has had on a 21-2 Wildcats squad that presently sits atop the BIG EAST standings with a 9-1 record.
"When you have special teams, you have special leaders like that. That's what he is."
In addition to his two BIG EAST Player of the Week plaudits, Bell has also been tabbed to the conference Honor Roll five other times.
The Wildcats resume action on Wednesday night when they face DePaul at 8:00 p.m. eastern time at All State Arena in Rosemont, Ill. The game will air on Fox Sports 1 (Dick Stockton and Kevin O'Neill) and CBS Sports Radio 610 (Ryan Fannon and Whitey Rigsby.
