Hubie White To Have Jersey Retired

Jan. 17, 2001

VILLANOVA, Pa. -Hubie White, a Villanova All-American guard in 1962, will have his jersey retired by the school, it was announced today.

"Hubie made an enormous contribution to the basketball tradition we enjoy here today," said Villanova Director of Athletics Vince Nicastro. "We are very happy to add his name to the list of our great basketball athletes whose names already hang in the Pavilion."

White played three varsity seasons of basketball at Villanova, earning All-American honors as a senior in 1962. In those three seasons he never averaged less than 19 points per game and finished his career with a scoring average of 20.6 ppg. As a senior he captained coach Jack Kraft's first NCAA Tournament team. The native of Philadelphia is one of only four Wildcats in school history to average 20 points or more in successive seasons.

A ceremony to honor White will be conducted at halftime on Jan. 27 at the Pavilion, when Boston College visits the Main Line. Tipoff for that Big East contest is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
