JayVaughn Pinkston is Philadelphia Big Five Player of the Week

Jan. 6, 2014

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Two Villanova Wildcats were honored Monday for their efforts in helping VU post a pair of BIG EAST Conference wins. Junior JayVaughn Pinkston (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin High School) is the Philadelphia Big Five Player of the Week and was also named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll. Freshman Josh Hart (Silver Spring, Md./Sidwell Friends School) is the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week.

Pinkston connected on 16-of-28 field goal attempts last week and averaged 20.5 ppg in helping the Wildcats down Butler 76-73 in overtime and Providence 91-61 at the Pavilion on Sunday evening. He averages 16.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per outing for the 13-1 Wildcats.

"He just keeps getting better and better as a player and, most importantly, as a young man," stated Villanova head coach Jay Wright following his team's win over Providence on Sunday. "He's almost becoming a leader and if you know where he came from, in terms of where he was as a freshman, to thinking of (him) as a leader, that's what we're most proud of.

"He's been consistent and he's really been playing well defensively. JayVaughn is becoming a complete player - he still has a long ways to go and can get a lot better."

Hart, meanwhile, earns his second Rookie of the Week nod in three weeks. He contributed a pair of key 3-pointers in the second half of Villanova's New Year's Eve victory over Butler and finished with 10 points. On Sunday, he contributed 10 points and six rebounds as the Wildcats built an early lead and never looked back against the Friars.

The freshman guard ranks fourth on the squad in scoring at 9.6 ppg and fourth in the BIG EAST in field goal percentage at .571 (44-of-77).

In other news Monday, Villanova climbed to No. 8 in the Associated Press poll, returning to the slot it held before falling at Syracuse. The Wildcats also moved into the top 10 of the USA Today Coaches poll at No. 10 after being listed at No. 14 last week.

Villanova visits Seton Hall at the Prudential Center on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. (CBS Sports Network and 1210 WPHT Radio) in its next action.
