Villanova Beats Miami 78-75

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Howard Brown scored 20 points including the last point of the game as Villanova defeated Miami 78-75 Saturday.

With the score 75-73 with 15 seconds remaining, T.J. Caouette hit two free throws to put Villanova ahead by four.

Tim James sank a layup with 10 seconds to go to cut the lead in half, but Brown sank one foul shot with 9.4 seconds remaining to ice the Wildcats win.

Brian Lynch added 14 points and Caouette finished with 10 for Villanova (9-10 overall, 6-5 Big East), which won for the second straight time.

Miami (14-5, 7-4) got 19 points and 11 rebounds from James, 18 points from Mario Bland and 14 points from Mike Byars-Dawson.

The Hurricanes played without starters Johnny Hemsley and Lucas Barnes due to violations of team rules. Hemsley was Miami's leading scorer in a 78-63 victory over the Wildcats on Jan. 22.

A fast break layup by Bland had tied the score at 65 with 5:01 remaining. But Villanova answered with six straight, including two fastbreak dunks by Brown to pull ahead by six. Four more points by Bland pulled the Hurricanes back within two.

The Wildcats opened a 51-42 lead early in the second half, but Miami fought back to tie the game at 53. The Wildcats had also taken a 10-point lead in the first half, but the Hurricanes cut it to 41-36 by halftime.
