VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Curtis Sumpter scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Villanova defeated local rival Penn 74-64 on Friday.
Ibrahim Jaaber scored 22 points and Eric Osmundson had 12 for Penn (4-4), which was playing for the first time since Dec. 8.
The Quakers made only 21 of 55 shots (38 percent) and missed 12 of 29 free throws. They were also outrebounded 44-34.
Villanova never trailed and took its biggest lead, 52-39, with 11:06 to play on a 3-pointer by Sumpter. Penn then went on a 12-4 run, closing to 56-51 on a Jaaber steal. The Wildcats answered with seven straight points to end the threat.
Villanova held a 36-25 halftime advantage with its stifling defense holding Penn to 8-for-25 from the field and forcing nine turnovers in the first half.
Kyle Lowry, Villanova's highly touted freshman guard, who has been sidelined with a knee injury, made his college debut and scored five points in 17 minutes.
