Villanova 70 NJIT 60

Villanova Head Coach Jay Wright

Opening Statement:

“Good for us to pull out a ‘W’ not shooting the ball well and I give them a lot of credit, they play a lot of teams tough. I thought their guards were great. They really just controlled the tempo of the game and sometimes you gotta find a way to win when you don’t make shots. We couldn’t buy a shot, couldn’t buy one in and we found a way, so we’re going to take that. We learned how to win a game where we couldn’t make a shot and I thought we took care of the ball better that was good for us. I just give NJIT a lot of credit, they played three teams in the BIG EAST and they were tough and they played us tough.”

On Villanova’s defense in tonight’s game:

“We did enough to win. I was a little disappointed in our defense, I thought probably for us, early in the season in a game like that, we might have turned the ball over a little more and that might have cost us the game. I thought we took care of the ball really well and they were changing the defense; they played some zone and they played a little bit of match up, they played man-to-man, and I thought we handled that pretty well and like I said we just couldn’t make a shot. Our defense was just ok it’s gotta get a lot better.  Every time we got it to eight, we relaxed defensively; we’d have a stupid foul on a backdoor cut. Our consistency is not where I’d like it to be. But you move on, you learn from it and you move on.”

On Villanova’s offensive efforts against NJIT:

“We’ve talked a lot about the fact that we have to make our depth a positive. If guys are not making shots, and somebody else comes in and it affects them, then our depths not a positive. James (James Bell) came back defensively in the second half, I thought Mouph (Mouphtaou Yarou) gave us a little spark and Darrun (Darrun Hilliard) really played well. But I don’t think they let it get to them, I think they came back in the second half and played better.”
