PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Curtis Sumpter scored 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead Villanova to a 54-43 victory over local rival La Salle on Saturday.
Allan Ray added 11 points for Villanova (3-1), which used its height advantage to outrebound the Explorers 44-25, and blocked five shots.
Steven Smith had 19 points for La Salle (1-5), which made only 11 of 38 shots in the game and committed 20 turnovers.
The Explorers, who trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, rallied to within 35-28 with 13:39 to play. But the Wildcats then went on a 14-4 run, with six of the points by Ray, and were never threatened again.
Trailing 7-6 five minutes into the game, Villanova ran off 14 consecutive points, holding the Explorers scoreless for 9:11, before Smith hit two straight baskets.
Villanova took a 31-20 lead at halftime as La Salle made only six of 20 shots and was outrebounded 25-10.
Villanova now leads 28-26 in the all-time series dating back to the 1933-34 season.
