Temple Head Coach Fran Dunphy

On Temple’s performance in the first half including their shot selection:

“We didn’t do a very good job on offense in the first half and obviously we didn’t do a very good job on defense either they shot over 50%, but I would agree our shot selection led to some easy baskets for them and it just didn’t look like we were very together in that first half but I give these guys a lot of credit and thought they came out in the second half and did a great job on defense and I thought we moved the ball well. I thought for the most part we did what we needed to do.”

On what was said in the Temple locker room during halftime:

“We talked about how we did not play very good offensively and we didn’t have a good shot selection and obviously we gave up some easy baskets to them too, but we just talked about clamping down. I give a lot of credit to these guys, our veteran guys, they understand the task at hand and they understand how big a game this is for us, they stepped up and did really good things in the second half.”

Villanova Head Coach Jay Wright

Opening Statement:

“I just thought Temple was really good tonight. I thought we played a very good first half and I thought in the second half Scootie Randall and Khalif Wyatt, you know look at these numbers, they probably don’t tell the story. Scootie scored, but I just thought Khalif was so good off ball even though he didn’t score. We just really struggled in ball screens and he (Khalif Wyatt) found the big guys a lot, he found Scootie Randall a lot. I can’t believe he only had four assists.   Jefferson (Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson) hit jumpers early and he really found people. I just really like their team and then again turnovers, turnovers hurt our team, as usual.”

On Temple’s 18-2 run over Villanova in the second half:

“I think Temple is a really sound team offensively and defensively.  We were turning the ball over and then they were scoring and getting set in their defense and then we were struggling to score against their defense. That was the game right there, that run. That’s not the kind of team you’re going to press and get back on they have too many ball handlers and passers. We came out slow in the second half… you can’t do that against a good team.

On Temple’s defense:

“They have good length, they space you. They switch ball screens; they keep their bigs in the paint.  JayVaughn (JayVaughn Pinkston) got into foul trouble in the first half and we weren’t really able to get any inside game going. In the second half we tried to go inside to Mo Sutton (Maurice Sutton) and we turned the ball over.  We tried to go inside a little bit because of that, but again, I just think their team defense is outstanding.”
