Men's Basketball Post-Game Quotes

Head Coach Jay Wright:
On the game:
"This game was a good start for us. I liked our defensive intensity. That's something we really wanted to try and work on. We rebounded the ball well. We got a little sloppy offensively in the second half. There was a stretch we were stuck on 66 for a long time, but that's because we had expended so much energy defensively. I'll take that for right now. You burn a lot of energy in the first game and that happened to us. Overall I was pleased with the effort for the first game, but there's still a lot of work to do."
On playing the first game after a long preseason:
"It was an enjoyable preseason. A lot of times the preseason is boring because you are beating up on each other, but for us it was nice. We saw some other games on TV and the guys were ready to play tonight. They were excited to be playing against somebody else."
On the defensive intensity:
"We had a very consistent defensive effort, which is something we have got to establish. To do well in the Big East you have to be able to cover up some poor offensive possessions with some good defensive possessions. That's what we did tonight. It was still a little sloppy offensively, but we covered some of those possessions by consistently playing good defense."
On Marcus Austin:
"Marcus did a really good job tonight. He really sparked us in the first half. There was a sequence in the first half where our starters were doing a good job but they got a little tired. Marcus came in and really pumped us up defensively. He got some rebounds and some deflections and wound up being our leading rebounder in 14 minutes. That's a pretty good effort."
Guard Randy Foye...
On playing the first game:
"It feels really good. We jumped on the other team early when the game started. It was a good step for us to come out and be able to play hard for long periods of time during the game. There were certain stretches where we got tired, but it was better than last year when we played lackadaisical at times. I think we did a good job being intense pretty much the entire game."
"We expected them to play zone, but once they started out in it they played it the whole game. That opened things up for me and Allan, and that when we were able to hurt them."
"We kept our foot on the gas pedal the whole game. Our main focus at halftime was to try to put them away and not worry about what the score was or how many points we had or they had, but just to put them away."
Guard Allan Ray...
On the game:
"It felt good getting out and playing a game. We were practicing for almost a month and there was a lot of adrenaline just being able to go out and play against another team."
"The way we started off basically said what our game plan was. We got into them and jumped on them early. The biggest thing we focused on was coming out and pressuring them to turn the ball over and give us easy baskets on the other end."
"We came out very aggressive on defense, and that started to get our offense going. I was kind of surprised they stayed in the zone when we started to hit shots. If you stay in it like that, we're going to make some shots."
