Post-Game Quotes

Villanova 67, Georgetown 57

March 6, 2013

Villanova Head Coach Jay Wright

Opening statement:

“Great game and great win for us. I think you all can see how good they are. I’m just really proud… impressed with our guys in the past couple of games and how well they’ve played to come away with losses having played really well.  Most young people would just feel sorry for themselves, but these guys just come to work every day, we had two hard practices with no day off… our guys came in and really played great defense… I’m just very proud of them.”

On who will make the NCAA Tournament:

“I think everybody’s got a unique resume and I think having ten wins in this league, the wins that we have the quality of wins against the high caliber teams. I think some of our previous bad loses like against Providence, they’re really not bad loses. I just think given where everything is right now, we would be, but we’re close enough where things could happen too. I think we’re in a good spot right now, but we’re not going to worry about that … We’re just going to keep getting better, focus on the next game. I just feel good about how we’re playing right now.”

On tonight’s challenges for both teams:

“I know what it’s like to be on their side of it. It is an incredible challenge to have won 11 in a row and come in and play a team that’s hungry and knowing you’ve got another big game coming up… they’ve got Syracuse coming up … that’s an incredible challenge.  It’s an incredible challenge for our guys to have lost the two the way they have and keep their composure.  If I had a choice of challenges I like his better, but it’s hard from his stand point too and that’s what coaching is and that’s what sports are … the mental challenges. They brought it, they were ready to play, but I think we played really well.”

On the progression of the team this season:

“There are segments earlier in the year like against Columbia … we were bad. We kept getting better and better and sometimes you can’t measure how much better you are by wins and losses… even though we’ve lost a couple games, we’re getting more consistent. We had 17 turnovers tonight, but we’re getting better at taking care of the ball, which is crazy to say with 17 turnovers… we are really getting better.”

On the loses to Pitt and Seton Hall:

“It was even more than having a shot, we were winning. Those two games are games you say you can’t lose, and we did. I was worried right when the game ended, but when you come to practice with these guys and you see how they work… I wasn’t worried. I really really respect these guys and it’s really enjoyable coaching these guys.”

On Georgetown’s offense:

“They shoot a lot of jump shots, they don’t really have a low post game. So when they’re shooting jump shots, you’re not really going to get a lot of fouls … we were driving the ball and getting the ball inside … so I’d say that is the difference.”

On stopping Georgetown player Otto Porter:

“We did. We had JayVaughn (JayVaughn Pinkston) guarding him, Taj (James Bell) guarded him and Darrun (Darrun Hilliard) guarded him, Daniel (Daniel Ochefu) guarded him. You could see when it was about over at the end he was ready to go.  He scored two right before we called time out. We really respect his ability to take over during games.”

Sophomore guard Darrun Hilliard

On his play in tonight’s game:

“I know I have confidence from my teammates and my coaches, but there was not second-guessing shooting that three. I do it every day in practice, I know they have all the confidence in me in the world, so all I had to do was make the shot.”

Jay Wright

On the BIG EAST:

“I love this conference; I don’t want it to end. I know it has to, but I don’t want it to. I try to enjoy every minute of it. When you win 10 games in this league… is big time. You’re a good team to win 10 games in this league.”

Sophomore forward JayVaugh Pinkston

On not listening to the talk about the NCAA tournament:

“We just try to focus the next game and the next play. Coach really tells us to ‘be here now’ and that’s what we try to focus on…. It’s hard, but we stick together.”

Jay Wright

On the season as a whole:

“We always stop and talk about how we did. This was a really really enjoyable year as a coach and for our coaching staff because we got better. The team gets better, individuals get better… we get 10 wins in this league, you’re a good team … I want these guys to feel really good about what they did
