Head Coach Jay Wright...
On the game:
"We played a very hungry team that was coming off a great game. They played great against Virginia in their last game and played really tough tonight. It was a tough game, a Big East battle. There are no easy ones in the Big East. I know they came in 0-7 and you can ask about the things we could have done better, but we played against a very tough and hungry team. I liked the way our guys gutted it out."
On the team not looking ahead to Monday's game against St. Joseph's:
"I wasn't worried about our guys looking ahead to the next game. I was worried about how Providence played against Virginia, and that they would come in here with a great level of confidence and have nothing to lose. Our guys do a good job of taking it one game at a time. It's something they've learned over the years and I really don't worry about it."
On defending Donnie McGrath:
"I was worried about Ryan Gomes playing well and Donnie McGrath going 9-for-9 against Virginia. I thought we did a good job against McGrath. He starts the offense, but then once he gives the ball up we didn't want to let him get it back. Mike Nardi did a good job of that. McGrath made one three in the second half, but otherwise Mike did a good job of not leaving him."
On the closing minutes of the game:
"Ryan Gomes hit some big shots. They had a sequence where Gomes and McGrath and the Tuuka Kotti made a three-pointer. They were making them in transition and off loose balls. It wasn't a lack of anything on our part. We were driving in, but didn't get to the foul line as much as we could have. We gutted it out. Providence was hungry and they played tough."
On the game:
"We knew how hungry they would be. The coaches said that Providence was a really good team and we couldn't just look at their record. We saw the film of their game against Virginia and saw that Donnie McGrath had a really good game. They are dangerous with him and Ryan Gomes. We tried to keep the ball out of McGrath's hands, but you can't keep it away from both him and Gomes. We had some momentum on our side at the end of the first half because we were able to put some points on the board and then got a defensive stop at the end of the first half."
