Villanova/St. John's Post-Game Quotes
Jan. 18, 2009
Villanova Head Coach Jay Wright...
On his team's effort in a 76-57 victory over St. John's: Right now what I like is that we played hard and competed for most of the game. We have had lapses where maybe we shot free throws well and maybe didn't foul as much. We may have been trying to play too perfectly. Today I thought we came out and played Villanova Basketball. That's what I feel good about.
On the eight day layoff between a 61-60 loss to Louisville on Jan. 10 and today: We were all dying to play a game. We really talked to the seniors that we wanted them to get the guys ready - not our coaching staff. I thought we were ready.
On the BIG EAST:The good thing about this league is that you get a chance to play good teams right away. That was what was difficult about this week. We have great respect, and I know people in our league do too, for how hard St. John's is going to play you. You never have to worry in this league about having your team relax. You know there is always a tough game coming up.
St. John's Coach Norm Roberts...
On Villanova's 19-3 start to the game: I give Villanova a lot of credit. They've got a good team and they play very well at home. They did a good job of pressing us out of what we wanted to do. We turned it over way too much and we let them get off to way too good a start. They got off to such a good start that it's hard to come back from that.
On his team's recent stretch facing Top 25 teams Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Connecticut and Villanova: This league is great. No matter what, every school in this league is going to go through that. They are going to have stretches where you play teams that are ranked back-to-back-to-back. We were fortunate enough to get one out of it, but it is tough. You just have to battle and I thought we battled well in the second half. We've just got guys playing 40 minutes and they're getting worn down. But that's part of it.
