Villanova 98 St. John's 86
St. John's Head Coach Steve Lavin
"Heck of a BIG EAST basketball game. Both teams had stretches where they played well and other stretches where they struggled, but there was some good counter-punching in terms of teams responding and finding a way to crawl back into a game. I think a really good learning experience as painful as it is to lose in overtime in a game where we had an opportunity to win, but I think there were some real positives"
Villanova Head Coach Jay Wright
"A great win, we'll take it. Harrison (D'Angelo Harrison) was incredible, he scores 36 points and I thought James Bell did a great job on him in the second half and I thought down the stretch we did a good job on him. About three minutes of 45 minutes we did a really good job on him, but the rest of the game he was just too much. Our offense carried us tonight and hopefully we can keep getting better defensively and keep growing from these games."
On defensive performance in overtime:
"That was the key. We got dialed in defensively in overtime which we have to learn how to do for 40 minutes and I thought in the first half we just didn't bring it defensively. We were lucky we were scoring, but it was really good in the overtime. I thought it was a good team defense. I asked Taj Bell (James Bell) in between the overtime and the end of regulation `You got five more minutes left in you of chasing this guy?' but everybody's got to help him. JayVaughn (JayVaughn Pinkston) had a couple good traps on Harrison to get the ball out of his hands, Daniel Ochefu had some quick rebounds, Darrun Hilliard had a couple of good steals. It was really good in overtime, the rest of the game, not great."
On JayVaughn Pinkston:
"He's a really talented guy. We know how much we need him and again, I thought he had about 12 minutes of really good, consistent play. Early in the first half, he just didn't have the intensity, but when the game gets on the line, he's always there for us and I'm glad we have him on our side."
On the competitiveness the BIG EAST play:
"That's a young team. We're inexperienced, they're young. Those guys are going to be really good. Harrison and the guard spots I thought were outstanding. They're not picked to be one of the best teams in the BIG EAST, but they come here and take us into overtime, this is going to be a hell of a league, this is going to be a really good league."
Freshman guard Ryan Arcidiacono
On his performance in tonight's game:
"I dreamed for a win, our first game in the BIG EAST, I just didn't want to do too much or try to force anything. But my teammates got me involved; they set some great screens out there, JayVaughn just got me open for some shots and tonight I was making them. Overall, it was a dream come true in that we won the game in overtime."
