In 1995, for the first time ever at Villanova, the University retired the uniform jerseys of six former Wildcat greats. Of the six individuals honored at halftime of the January 28th game against Providence, four were basketball players: Paul Arizin, Wali Jones, Bill Melchionni, and women's standout Shelly Pennefather. The other two honorees were longtime Wildcat men's head coach Al Severance and legendary trainer Jake Nevin.

These six begin a tradition that will continue on a yearly basis. Those honored individuals will forever have their jerseys and numbers displayed from the rafters of duPont Pavilion. However, the jersey numbers will remain in circulation.

In 1996, the tradition continued with four former Wildcats returning to be honored: Coach Jack Kraft, Keith Herron, Larry Hennessy, and John Pinone.

Last season, All-American Howard Porter returned to cheers from the Villanova crowd as his jersey was raised to the rafters.
