Schedule and Rosters Announced For Blue-Gray Classic
Sept. 12, 2012
VILLANOVA, Pa. - The game schedule and team rosters were announced today for the annual Blue-Gray Classic, the fall season intra-squad "World Series" that Villanova hosts each year. This season the five-game series features two weekend dates and three weekday games at the Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth. All games are open to the public and fans are invited to come and see the Wildcats in their preparations for the 2013 season.
The series opener is this coming Saturday, September 15 and first pitch is scheduled for 10:50 a.m. Junior right-handed pitchers Pat Young (The Woodlands, Texas) and Max Almonte (Long Beach, N.Y.) will oppose each other on the mound in the game one. Young (Gray) and Almonte (Blue) are each coming off strong summer seasons and are expected to hold spots in the Villanova starting rotation during the upcoming season.
Game two is slated for Saturday, September 22 at 10:50 a.m. and features a matchup of left-handers. Sophomore Josh Harris (Streamwood, Ill.) gets the start for the Gray squad and will be opposed by junior Matthew Meurer (Katy, Texas) from the Blue team.
The final three games of the series are all weekday games beginning at 4 p.m. Game three is on Wednesday, October 3; game four is on Tuesday, October 9; and game five is on Thursday, October 11. Freshman right-hander Luke Emling (Nottingham, Pa.) starts for the Gray team in the third game against sophomore lefty Jeff Courter (Maple Glen, Pa.). The game four pitching matchup pits Gray team senior Kevin MacLachlan (Matawan, N.J.) against junior right-hander Matt Lengel (Devon, Pa.) from the Blue team.
One of the highlights of each year's "Fall Classic" is the bragging rights at stake among the team's assistant coaches. Senior assistant coach Rod Johnson and pitching coach Nick Weisheipl will coach one team and will go head-to-head against assistant coach Derek Shunk and Director of Baseball Operations Deron Spink. The teams to which each pair of coaches will be assigned has not yet been determined.
Fall workouts for the Wildcats are in full swing and each year the Blue-Gray Classic serves as a lead-in to the baseball team's annual Scout Day, which is an unofficial ending to the fall season. Villanova returns 19 players from last season, including 11 pitchers and eight position players.
