Lineup Stays Hot But Wildcats Fall to Western Michigan, 11-6
Senior second baseman Todd Czinege (Overland Park, Kan.) drove in three runs for the second straight game and was one of three players with multi-hit games but a five-run third inning was too much to overcome as Villanova (2-11) fell to Western Michigan (7-6) by a final count of 11-6 at South County Park on Saturday morning. The game was the last of six for the Wildcats during their Spring Break trip to the Sunshine State.
Bats Break Out as Wildcats Hammer Iowa, 10-1
Senior second baseman Todd Czinege (Overland Park, Kan.) and sophomore catcher Doug deMarrais (Bernardsville, N.J.) each homered and drove in three runs, senior starting pitcher Hunter Schryver (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) struck out nine over seven-plus shutout innings and Villanova (2-10) rolled to a 10-1 win over Iowa (7-5) at North Charlotte Regional Park on Friday afternoon. All nine batters in the Wildcats lineup reached base safely at least once in the rout, and the team finished with a season-high 13 hits.
Wildcats Fall 8-1 in Mid-Week Contest at USF
In a matchup of former BIG EAST foes, Villanova (1-10) scored its only run of the game with two outs in the top of the sixth inning and fell to USF (11-1) by a final score of 8-1 at the USF Baseball Stadium on Wednesday evening. Freshman left fielder Tyler Bruno (Breinigsville, Pa.) doubled home the Wildcats run in the sixth inning to take over the team lead for RBI this season. Freshman right-handed pitcher Ryan Pfutzenreuter (Deerfield, Ill.) allowed one earned run over 2 2/3 innings in his first collegiate start.
Czinege Named to BIG EAST Honor Roll
Czinege helped the Wildcats to their first win of the season against Central Michigan with a two-out double in the ninth to give VU insurance runs to clinch the victory. He averaged .333 with 13 hits, two RBI, a double and four runs.
McCarthy Fans Five in Relief, Wildcats Fall to Boston College, 7-1
A close game early on turned in the fifth inning and Villanova (1-9) came out on the short end of a 7-1 score against Boston College (4-5) at North Charlotte Regional park on Sunday afternoon. Four runs by the Eagles in the bottom of the fifth broke the game open, and neither team scored from that point on. Junior right-hander Conor McCarthy (Glenview, Ill.) pitched three innings of perfect relief for the Wildcats, retiring all nine batters he faced with a career-high five strikeouts.
Timely Plays Spark Wildcats in 4-3 Win Over Central Michigan
Sophomore closer Zach Lutner (Sicklerville, N.J.) recorded a strikeout and a fly to right after inheriting the potential tying and winning runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Villanova (1-8) earned its first win of the season with a 4-3 triumph over Central Michigan (3-6) in the Snowbird Baseball Classic on Saturday afternoon. In a game that was scoreless until the sixth inning at North Charlotte Regional Park, the Wildcats made big plays when they needed them at the plate, in the field and on the mound.
Schryver Solid, Czinege Has Three Hits in 3-1 Loss to Ball State
In the first game of its six-game Florida trip, Villanova (0-8) got solid pitching from senior starter Hunter Schryver (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and the bullpen to go along with three hits from senior second baseman Todd Czinege (Overland Park, Kan.) in a 3-1 loss to Ball State (5-3) on Friday afternoon. Seven pitchers for the Wildcats combined to give up just six hits on the day, while the lineup produced nine hits.
Weekend Preview: Wildcats Gear up for Snowbird Baseball Classic
The Wildcats gear up for their annual Spring Break trip to Port Charlotte, Fla. Over the week, Villanova will play six different games, including Ball State, Central Michigan, Boston College, USF, Iowa, and Western Michigan.
