Wildcats Rally But Fall in Extra Innings to Seton Hall, 7-6
Despite a four-run rally in the seventh inning which tied the game and forced extra innings, Villanova (15-24, 3-6 BIG EAST) fell by a final score of 7-6 in 10 innings to Seton Hall (29-12, 4-2 BIG EAST) at Owen T. Carroll Field on Sunday afternoon. A one-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Pirates the narrow victory and a sweep of the three-game series.
Early Burst of Runs Costs Wildcats in 13-8 Loss to Seton Hall
Villanova (15-23, 3-5 BIG EAST) took the lead in each of the first two innings but also gave up 11 runs in the first three frames of an eventual 13-8 loss to Seton Hall (28-12, 3-2 BIG EAST) at Owen T. Carroll Field on Saturday afternoon. Six different players had multi-hit games for the Wildcats, who matched the Pirates with 14 hits on the day.
Wildcats Edged By Seton Hall, 4-3, in Extra Inning Heartbreaker
In a tightly contested game that was well played by both teams, a walk-off single with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning accounted for the end result as Villanova (15-22, 3-4 BIG EAST) lost a 4-3 heartbreaker to Seton Hall (27-12, 2-2 BIG EAST) in the opener of a three-game series at Owen T. Carroll Field on Friday afternoon. Junior starting pitcher Hunter Schryver (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) pitched eight innings of one-hit, shutout ball and the Wildcats led 3-0 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning before the Pirates rallied to tie the game and force extra innings.

After finishing a stretch in which it played 19 of the past 25 games at home, Villanova (15-21, 3-3 BIG EAST) opens a three-game road series at Seton Hall (26-12, 1-2 BIG EAST) on Friday afternoon. The series opener will air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network beginning at 12 p.m. The start time for the game was moved up from its original time to avoid the threat of bad weather later in the evening.
Strong Start By McCarthy Leads Wildcats to 5-2 Victory Over La Salle
Sophomore starting Conor McCarthy (Glenview, Ill.) didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning and Villanova (15-21) wound up pitching a four-hitter in a 5-2 victory over La Salle (10-28) at the Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth on Wednesday afternoon. McCarthy (2-2, 2.16 ERA) wound up allowing just one hit in five-plus scoreless frames and freshman reliever Zach Lutner (Sicklerville, N.J.) recorded the final four outs for his first collegiate save.
Hunter Schryver Earns Second Straight BIG EAST Honor Roll Nod
For the second straight week and the third time in his career, junior starting pitcher Hunter Schryver (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) has been named to the weekly BIG EAST Honor Roll. The league’s weekly baseball award were announced on Monday afternoon. Schryver was outstanding in his most recent start, which came in a win over St. John’s last Friday in the opener of a three-game series.
Wildcats Fall to St. John’s, 5-2, in Series Finale
Junior starting pitcher Ryan Doty (Rye, N.Y.) pitched six strong innings with just one earned run allowed but Villanova (14-21, 3-3 BIG EAST) dropped the rubber game of a three-game series to St. John’s (19-13-1, 4-2 BIG EAST) by a final score of 5-2 at the Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth on Sunday afternoon. The visiting Red Storm scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the top of the sixth inning on Sunday and won the final two games of the weekend series.
Wildcats Get Strong Relief Pitching Despite 6-1 Loss to St. John’s
Freshman relief pitchers Zach Lutner (Sicklerville, N.J.) and Sal Fradella (Manhasset, N.Y.) combined to pitch 5 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run but Villanova (14-20, 3-2 BIG EAST) fell behind early and lost by a final score of 6-1 to St. John’s (18-13-1, 3-2 BIG EAST) at the Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth on Saturday afternoon. The weekend series between the longtime conference rivals is now tied at one game apiece.
