Hunter Schryver Named Philadelphia Big 5 Co-Pitcher of the Year
Junior starting pitcher Hunter Schryver (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) shared Philadelphia Big 5 Pitcher of the Year honors and was one of three Villanova players who earned postseason recognition in an announcement of the 2016 Philadelphia Big 5 Team on Friday afternoon. Schryver and junior second baseman Todd Czinege (Overland Park, Kan.) each garnered All-Big honors and senior relief pitcher Kagan Richardson (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) was named to the Big 5 All-Academic Team. The share of the Pitcher of the Year award for Schryver is the seventh major award won by the Wildcats since the Big 5 started giving out postseason baseball honors in 2006.
Contract of Baseball Head Coach Joe Godri Will Not Be Renewed
Villanova University Director of Athletics Mark Jackson announced on Tuesday that the contract of baseball head coach Joe Godri will not be renewed. Godri had been at the helm of the Wildcats baseball program for the past 15 years and was one of only 10 full-time head coaches in the program’s 150-year history.
Schryver, Beermann and Czinege Headline Five All-BIG EAST Selections
The largest group of Villanova all-conference players in more than 20 years was revealed on Wednesday morning, as five Wildcats were named All-BIG EAST selections in a vote of the league’s head coaches. Junior starting pitcher Hunter Schryver (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), senior first baseman Max Beermann (Tampa, Fla.) and junior second baseman Todd Czinege (Overland Park, Kan.) all garnered first team honors, while senior third baseman Kevin Jewitt (West Chester, Pa.) and senior left fielder Adam Goss (Bellaire, Texas) were second team choices.
Wildcats Lose Season Finale to Xavier, 9-0
In its final game of the 2016 season, Villanova (20-32, 5-13 BIG EAST) was held to five hits and dropped a 9-0 decision to Xavier (27-28, 14-4 BIG EAST) at Hayden Field on Saturday afternoon. Junior second baseman Todd Czinege (Overland Park, Kan.) reached base three times in the loss, going 1-for-2 with a single and two walks.
Offense Breaks Out in 15-10 Loss to Xavier on Friday Afternoon
After being shut out on just five hits in the series opener a day earlier, Villanova (20-31, 5-12 BIG EAST) scored 10 runs on 11 hits and eight walks but fell to Xavier (26-28, 13-4 BIG EAST) by a final score of 15-10 at Hayden Field on Friday afternoon. Senior first baseman Max Beermann (Tampa, Fla.) doubled, tripled and scored three runs for the Wildcats, who had all nine batters in the starting lineup reach base safely at least once.
Wildcats Fall 1-0 to Xavier on Lone Run in Bottom of Eighth Inning
Junior starting pitcher Hunter Schryver (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) made his final outing of the 2016 season one of his best in a head-to-head pitchers’ duel but Villanova (20-30, 5-11 BIG EAST) came out on the short end of a 1-0 decision in the opener of a three-game series versus Xavier (25-28, 12-4 BIG EAST) at Hayden Field on Thursday afternoon. The only run of the game scored on a soft flare to right-center field with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Max Beermann Named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Senior first baseman Max Beermann (Tampa, Fla.) was named to the weekly BIG EAST Honor Roll for the second time this season in an announcement made by the conference office on Monday evening. Beermann had three consecutive multi-hit games and batted .571 (8-for-14) to help Villanova win two of three games in a road series at Georgetown last weekend.
Offense Keeps Rolling as Wildcats Down Georgetown, 10-5
Senior left fielder Adam Goss (Bellaire, Texas) hit a two-run double with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the second inning and senior third baseman Kevin Jewitt (West Chester, Pa.) followed with a two-run single during a six-run frame as Villanova (20-29, 5-10 BIG EAST) won the game and the series against Georgetown (25-29, 8-10 BIG EAST) with a 10-5 victory at Shirley Povich Field on Sunday afternoon.
