Baseball Season Preview: Starting a New Chapter
For a team that is returning 24 players from its 2016 roster, it feels like a lot has changed for the Villanova baseball program since the end of last season. To start with, the Wildcats graduated what was perhaps the most experienced senior class in the 150-plus year history of the program. In addition, a new head coach has come on board for only the fifth time in the past 68 years. The roster for the 2017 campaign was set following the conclusion of fall ball, with nine newcomers among the 33 players on the roster. Maybe most significant among all that will be new for the Wildcats this season is the playing surface at the Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth. Artificial turf was installed on the infield and behind home plate during the fall, and the team began practicing on the new surface as early as the end of September.

Plenty has happened in and around the Villanova program since the team wrapped up the 2016 season. Before turning our full attention to the 152nd season of varsity baseball on campus, below are the top notes and storylines from the past several months.

Schryver, who is one of the top returning seniors in the league, was also a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. From `Cats to Cubs: Matt Szczur a World Series Champion
On what was surely one of the greatest nights of his life, it was rather incredible to think that Matt Szczur is only 27 years old. Wasn’t it just nine years ago that he first came to Villanova, with the story of his incredible collegiate career yet to be written? He became an all-star, one of the best players in the country and a highly coveted professional prospect in two different sports. He was named the MVP of a national championship game. Then he interrupted everything just to have the chance at saving the life of a complete stranger, someone who he didn’t know was only 15 months old at the time and who he surely didn’t know would now – six years later – be a happy, healthy and cancer-free survivor.
