Wildcats Give Back: Softball & Baseball Get Involved with Local Philanthropies
This past month while many of the Villanova fall sports have been settling into their regular competition schedules, some Wildcats have been taking advantage of their free time by giving back to the community. Villanova baseball recently volunteered at the Colonial School District 5K Race while the Wildcats softball team spent some time at the Brian Aneurysm Awareness 5k.
Former Wildcats Star Matt Szczur Promoted to Major Leagues by Chicago Cubs
Former Villanova baseball and football star Matt Szczur has been promoted to the major leagues by the Chicago Cubs and will join the team in New York on Sunday prior to the team's game against the New York Mets. Szczur will become the 56th former Villanova baseball player to reach the major leagues.
Matt Meurer Named to Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team
Senior relief pitcher Matt Meurer (Katy, Texas) garnered a spot on the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team in an announcement made on Wednesday morning. Meurer was one of the top performers on the field for the Wildcats this season while continuing to be equally successful academically. Meurer is one of 11 players named to the Academic All-Area squad.
JB Kole Selected by Milwaukee Brewers in Eighth Round of First-Year Player Draft

Right-handed pitcher JB Kole (Basking Ridge, N.J.) was chosen by the Milwaukee Brewers in the eighth round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Friday evening. Kole, a 6-3 power pitcher, was the 236th overall pick in the 2014 draft and is the 66th pick from Villanova since the inception of the draft 50 years ago.
Todd Czinege Among Four BIG EAST Players Recognized as Freshman All-Americans
Freshman second baseman Todd Czinege (Overland Park, Kan.) was one of four players from BIG EAST teams to be named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in an announcement by Collegiate Baseball newspaper on Wednesday morning. Czinege is also one of seven second baseman selected nationwide for the honor.

The annual Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft begins with live coverage on MLB Network this Thursday evening and will continue on Friday and Saturday afternoons. Villanova baseball players have had a long and successful history in the draft and the current Wildcats roster features a number of potential pro prospects who have drawn the eye of scouts and talent evaluators from a number of teams.
Todd Czinege and Matt Meurer Received Big 5 Baseball Honors
Freshman second baseman Todd Czinege (Overland Park, Kan.) and senior relief pitcher Matt Meurer (Katy, Texas) each were recognized by the Big 5 on Tuesday afternoon in an announcement of several year-end awards. Czinege was selected as the Co-Rookie of the Year in Philadelphia and was named the All-Big 5 selection at second base. Meurer was one of two relievers to earn a spot on the All-Big 5 team and he also garnered a spot on the Big 5 All-Academic Team. The awards are voted on by the coaches and sports information directors of the five area Division I baseball teams.

Meurer is the first Villanova pitcher since 2007 to earn all-conference honors and Czinege is the Wildcats first freshman to garner an All-BIG EAST nod in nine years.
