Villanova Baseball Inks Four More Recruits During Spring Signing Period
April 30, 2001 VILLANOVA, PA - On Monday, April 30, Villanova Associate Head Baseball Coach Joe Godri announced the signing of four recruits for the 2001 spring signing period. These four recruits - Mark Cardillo (Naples, Fla./ Barron Collier), Joe McCoy (Dallas, Texas/ Highland Park), Matt Derr (Pennsburg, Pa./ Upper Perkioman) and James Baxter (Toms River, N.J./ Monsignor Donovan) - give the Wildcats a total of 10 for the 2002 season. During the fall signing period, Villanova inked Nick Allen (Green Lake, Pa./ Boyertown) , Alan Day (Lake Ridge, Va./ Woodbridge Senior ), and Peter Riccio (Warren , N.J./ Watchung Hills).
Hailing from Naples, Fla., where he attended Barron Collier High School is Mark Cardillo. Cardillo (5-8, 160) is a right-handed infielder who will come in and compete right away for time as a middle infielder. A Baseball Factory All-American, Cardillo is a very good defensive player who will add a great deal of team speed to the Wildcat lineup.
A right-handed pitcher from Dallas, Texas and Highland Park High School, Joe McCoy (6-3, 190) will immediately add depth to the Villanova pitching staff. McCoy throws in the mid to upper 80's and could become a weekday starter for the Wildcats, as well as seeing time out of the bullpen in conference play.
One of three outfielders to sign with the `Cats is right-hander Matt Derr (6-1, 190), who hails from Pennsburg, Pa. And Upper Perkioman High School. Derr possesses good defensive skills including a strong throwing arm. A 1999 and 2000 All-Conference selection, he will also add much-needed power to the Villanova lineup. Derr played in the Carpenter Cup for Chester County in 2000.
A left-handed pitcher from Toms River, N.J. and Monsignor Donovan High School is James Baxter (5-10, 160). A crafty left-hander, Baxter will have the opportunity to pitch out of the bullpen immediately in both conference and non-conference action.
