NEW YORK - Sophomore first baseman Max Beermann (Tampa, Fla.) was named to the weekly BIG EAST Honor Roll earlier this week after a sensational five-game stretch against Saint Joseph's and St. John's last week. In five games against those two opponents Beermann batted .556 (10-for-18) with a .667 on-base percentage and an .833 slugging percentage. His efforts helped Villanova win the final two games of its first BIG EAST series of the season.
Beermann is currently leading the conference in both on-base percentage (.457) and slugging percentage (.569), while tying for sixth place in the league with a .343 batting average. In addition to those categories Beermann is also leading the Wildcats in runs scored (22) and doubles (10), while ranking second in home runs (3), triples (2) and hit by pitch (9).
Over the past few weeks Beermann has stepped up his game to an even higher level. He is currently riding a 13-game hitting streak and has also reached base safely in 18 consecutive games. Both of those streaks are the longest of his career and Beermann has gotten on base at a .481 clip during the 18-game streak.
In the second game of last weekend's series versus the Red Storm, Beermann drove in the winning run in a 5-4 victory to help Villanova snap a 14-game home losing streak against BIG EAST opponents. He also had a single and a walk in the series finale as the Wildcats won the season series versus St. John's for the first time in 15 years. In the series opener Beermann went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a solo home run.
Earlier in the week Beermann had reached base safely in all five of his plate appearances at Saint Joseph's, when he went 3-for-3 with a walk and a hit by pitch.
Villanova returns to action this weekend when it travels to Xavier for a three-game series.
