VILLANOVA, Pa. - Junior starting pitcher Pat Young (The Woodlands, Texas) has received a steady stream of recognition after his incredible performance against Chicago State last week. Young has been named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week and the Philadelphia Big Five Pitcher of the Week while also being chosen as a national player of the week by three different organizations.
Young was named one of three National Players of the Week by College Baseball Newspaper and was selected as the National Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association (NCBWA) as well as by College Baseball Insider.
Young had one of the top single-game pitching performances in school history in his most recent start, when he pitched seven scoreless innings and had a career high 18 strikeouts in a win over Chicago State. Young allowed only three hits and just six of the 26 batters he faced put the ball in play. He struck out the side in six different innings and produced the most strikeouts in a game by any Division I pitcher over the last two seasons.
With the ability to throw his full arsenal of pitches for strikes Young generated 23 swings and misses by Cougars batters. His start came in the midst of a stretch of 27 1/3 consecutive innings in which Villanova pitchers did not allow an earned run last week. Young has allowed no more than one earned run in three of his first five starts of the season.
In his two most recent starts, against Iona and Chicago State, Young has pitched a total of 14.0 innings and allowed just six hits (.125 opponent batting average) and one earned run while walking five and striking out 29. He gave up one run on three hits and struck out a then career-high 11 batters in a 5-2 win over Iona on March 8, taking a no-decision in the contest after exiting with the score tied 1-1 after seven innings of play.
This is the first time in his career that Young has been named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week. He had previously been named to the league's honor roll last season after pitching eight innings in a 5-2 win at Louisville. Young was also named the Big Five Pitcher of the Week following that game.
Villanova is currently 5-12 on the season and the team returns to action on Wednesday afternoon with a road game at Penn. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
