PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Junior pitcher Brian Streilein (Staten Island, N.Y.) was named the Philadelphia Big Five Baseball Pitcher of the Week, it was announced today. Streilein pitched seven strong innings to lead Villanova to a 12-4 victory over Akron last week in the Palm Beach Challenge, earning his first win of the season.
In his start against the Zips, Streilein allowed just six hits and two earned runs, while striking out six and walking none for the second straight start. After allowing a run-scoring single with one out in the first inning, Streilein retired 14 of the next 17 batters he faced through the end of the fifth inning. By that time, the Wildcats had built a 6-1 lead and never looked back on their way to the victory.
The seven innings pitched by Streilein are the most by a Villanova starter through the first 12 games of the season and his performance stabilized the rotation a day after the Wildcats suffered a 15-0 loss at the hands of North Carolina State.
Through his first three starts of the season, Streilein has walked just three while striking out 12 in 15.0 innings pitched. He makes his first home start of the season this Friday at 3:15 p.m. when Villanova opens the Villanova Baseball Bash against Niagara.
