PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior shortstop Tyler Sciacca (Staten Island, N.Y.) is coming off consecutive three-hit games and on Monday afternoon he was recognized by both the BIG EAST and the Big Five for his efforts this past weekend. Sciacca earned a spot on the BIG EAST weekly honor roll and is also the Philadelphia Big Five Player of the Week.

Sciacca has hit safely in all four games for Villanova this season and in three games last weekend was 7-for-12 (.583) with three runs scored and three runs batted in. He also drew two walks and did not strike out in 14 plate appearances while posting a .643 on-base percentage and an .833 slugging percentage. Sciacca had one double and one triple among his seven total hits.

In the Wildcats first win of the season - a 6-3 decision against La Salle on Saturday night - Sciacca went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. He led off the top of the sixth inning with a single that kick-started a two-run rally to give Villanova the lead for good in a close game. Sciacca also doubled home a run in the top of the ninth inning to give the Wildcats a much-needed insurance run.

Sciacca is hitting .529 (9-for-17) on the young season with four runs scored and three RBI while striking out just once in 19 plate appearances. He has raised his career batting average to .322 in 144 games and with his sixth-inning single against La Salle on Saturday night reached 150 career hits.

This is the fourth time in his career that Sciacca has earned weekly recognition from the BIG EAST. He was also named to the Honor Roll three times last season on his way to receiving second team All-BIG EAST honors at the end of the season. This week also marks the fourth time that Sciacca has been the Big Five Player of the Week in his career.

Villanova returns to action this weekend when it plays a three-game series against nationally-ranked Florida State. The series begins on Friday at 4 p.m. at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee and the game can be seen live on ESPN3.
