Kevin Jewitt and Max Almonte Earn Weekly Honors
Feb. 19, 2014
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Sophomore third baseman Kevin Jewitt (West Chester, Pa.) was named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll and is also the Philadelphia Big Five Player of the Week, as announced on Wednesday afternoon. Junior starting pitcher Max Almonte (Long Beach, N.Y.) was also recognized and is this week's Big Five Pitcher of the Week.
Jewitt was the leading Villanova hitter in a three-game series at Charleston Southern which opened the season last weekend. He batted .417 (5-for-12) and hit safely in all three games of the series, including a pair of multi-hit games. Jewitt also scored two runs and drew a walk while playing flawless defense at third base with four putouts and five assists.
In the series finale on Sunday afternoon Jewitt went 2-for-5 with two runs scored in an 8-4 defeat. He led off both the third and fifth innings with singles and eventually came around to score in those frames. All four runs for the Wildcats were scored during those two innings, with Jewitt being a linchpin for those run-scoring rallies.
Almonte made his first start of the season in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon. He gave up just one run over a career-high seven innings and received a no-decision in an eventual 2-1 loss. Almonte tied a career high by facing 27 batters and he allowed three earned runs or fewer for the 14th time in 18 career starts.
Each team scored a single run in the third inning and Almonte allowed a leadoff single to start the home half of the fourth. That was the last hit against him, however, and he went on to retire 12 of the last 16 batters he faced. Almonte allowed just three hits and a walk in his seven innings.
Villanova returns to the diamond this weekend to play in the Spartan Baseball Classic at Norfolk State. First up at the tournament for the Wildcats is Quinnipiac on Friday at 3 p.m.
