VILLANOVA, PA. - In baseball action at McGeehan Field on the campus of Villanova University, the Villanova Wildcats defeated the Rider Broncs, 7-2. With the win, Villanova improves to 22-16-1, while Rider falls to 18-19.
Freshman left fielder Matt Longo was the hitting star for the Wildcats, as the rookie went four-for-five with a home run, a double and three RBI. For the season, Longo is now batting .427 with 16 doubles and 10 home runs.
Senior third baseman Rick Welsh had a strong day for Villanova, going two-for-five with a double and a home run. Welsh's homer was his 10th of the season, tying Longo for team honors. Junior designated hitter Dan Boublis added three hits in five at bats, including a double for the Wildcats.
On the mound, junior Brian Buckingham improved to 3-1 on the season, as he hurled 5.1 innings, giving up one run on five hits. Buckingham walked seven and struckout four in his outing. Sophomore Brain Manning came on in relief to pitch the final 3.2 innings and earn his second save of the season. Manning allowed no hits, while striking out seven. The only run Manning surrendered came when Rider right fielder Michael Wenner scored on a throwing error by Villanova catcher Dan Glover.
Each team missed numerous opportunities to score, as Rider left 16 men on base and Villanova left 11 base runners stranded.
Villanova returns to action on Friday, April 24 when they host West Chester at 3 p.m.
