After a scoreless third, Fenster increased Rutgers' lead to 8-1 with a two-run single in the fourth, scoring sophomore Brian Ciemniecki and DeJesus.
Brown, after allowing the run, cruised through the next four innings, retiring 10 of 11 batters before a sixth-inning single by Rob Cafiero. Villanova finally broke through against Brown in the seventh for single run, as Joe Delvecchio singled to lead off the innings, advanced to second on a single by Brian Buckingham and scored on an single by Pizzini. The Cats would reach Brown for another run in the eighth on two doubles, but Rutgers responded with a single run in the eighth on a hit batter and a two-out, RBI single from Zoccolillo, his third RBI of the game, giving RU a 9-3 lead.
