Baseball Drops Two Games to Seton Hall

S. ORANGE, N.J .-- In a doubleheader played at Owen T. Carroll Field, the Seton Hall Pirates swept a doubleheader from the Villanova Wildcats. Seton Hall earned a 10-2 win in game one and a 12-0 victory in game two. With the two losses, Villanova falls to 20-14-1 overall and 4-9 in Big East play, while Seton Hall improves to 20-13 overall and 9-4 in league play.

After taking a 2-1 lead in the top of the second on solo home runs by senior third baseman Rick Welsh and senior catcher Augie Grove, the Pirates tallied three runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to cruise to the victory. Seton Hall third baseman Craig Zimmerli led the Seton Hall charge, going three-for-four with six RBI, a triple and a home run.

On the mound in game one, Pirate freshman BJ Benik threw a complete game, giving up two runs on seven hits, while striking out five. For Villanova, junior Chris Pilato took the loss. Pilato pitched 4.2 innings, yielding 10 runs on seven hits. Pilato struck out two and walked three.

In game two, Seton Hall registered three runs in the second, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to earn the win. Junior Brian McGee had a big game for the Pirates going two-for-two with two home runs and five RBI. Villanova was paced by freshman Matt Longo who was three-for-three with two doubles.

Villanova and Seton Hall will conclude their three-game series on Sunday, April 19 with a single game beginning at noon.
