Boublis Leads Wildcats Past Hoyas
WASHINGTON, DC ---Junior Dan Boublis pitched a nine inning complete game to help lead Villanova past Georgetown, 3-1, in Big East baseball action. With the win, Villanova improves to 18-12-1 overall and 4-7 in Big East action, while Georgetown falls to 18-24 overall and 3-11 in conference play. The Hawthorne, N.J. native yielded eights hits and just one walk, while striking out 11 in the victory.
With the game scoreless in the top of the sixth, Wildcat freshman Matt Longo got Villanova hit his ninth home run of the year to give Villanova a 1-0 lead. In the seventh inning, the Wildcats increased their lead to 3-0. With two outs, freshman Nick Piantek smacked a two-run home run driving in junior Bill Brehm who had previously singled.
Boublis lost his shutout with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, when Jeremy Horowitz's infield single scored centerfielder Sean Mignogna. With Georgetown runners on first and second and the winning run at the plate, Boublis struck out Matt Dzamba looking to end the game.
Hoya starter Jason Urban had a strong outing as well for Georgetown, as he pitched a complete game, giving up three runs on six hits and striking out seven. Urban retired the first 10 batters he faced. Offensively, left fielder Kevin DeSanto led the Georgetown charge with three hits in four at bats.
Besides his solo home run, Longo also added a double for Villanova.
Villanova returns to action on Thursday, April 16 when the Cats will play a doubleheader. At 3 p.m., Villanova will play at Drexel, before traveling to Veterans Stadium to play Delaware in the Liberty Bell Classic Championship. First pitch for the Liberty Bell final is scheduled for 7 p.m.
