Wildcats Hit Three Home Runs in 10-7 Win over Penn
April 5, 2006 PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - On a windy day in Philadelphia, Villanova (13-14) cranked three home runs and defeated Penn (7-19) by a score of 10-7 on Wednesday afternoon at Meiklejohn Stadium. Senior first baseman Jeremy Hunt (Tampa, Fla.) hit his seventh home run of the season and fourth in the last six games as the Wildcats topped the Quakers for the second time in eight days.
Villanova jumped in front with two runs in the first inning, one in the second and two more in the third. Sophomore Ryan Arcadia (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) led off the game with a single and stole third base after being advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Classmate Derek Shunk (Yardley, Pa.) beat out an infield hit to score Arcadia with the first run of the game, and Hunt hit a solo home run later in the inning.
Sophomore James Dolbier (Lebanon, N.J.) had two hits, three runs batted in and the other Wildcat home run. Villanova led 7-4 after five innings before Dolbier's three-run homer in the top of the sixth put the game out of reach at 10-4. Arcadia reached on an error to start the inning and Dolbier connected for his second long ball of the season after Hunt was intentionally walked. Hunt drew two walks and scored twice in the game, while Shunk finished the day with three hits and three RBI.
Penn got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the second inning, and added three more in the fifth inning thanks in part to Joey Boaen's two-run triple. Boaen had three hits, three runs scored and four runs driven in on the game. He hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning and finished just a single short of the cycle.
Sophomore Frank Jankowski (Berwick, Pa.) retired all four of the batters he faced in relief and earned his third victory of the season. Jankowski struck out two after replacing starting pitcher Jordan Ellis (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), who allowed three earned runs in 4.2 innings pitched. He was making his first appearance since pitching against Central Connecticut on March 11. Redshirt sophomore Bill Hoffman (Poughkeepsie, Pa.) allowed just an unearned run in the seventh inning and sophomore Gus Guida (Martinsville, N.J.) worked the final two innings.
Wednesday afternoon's game concluded a busy midweek schedule for Villanova, which played on both Tuesday and Wednesday for just the second time this season. The Wildcats will be in action this weekend at the University of Connecticut for their second straight road conference series. Villanova and the Huskies will begin a three-game series on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
NOTES: Freshman catcher Wes Borden (State College, Pa.) made his second start of the season and was 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI ... Borden has reached base seven times in nine plate appearances in his two starts, including five walks ... Arcadia extended his hitting streak to seven games ... Shunk, Hunt and Dolbier are each tied for the team-lead with seven multi-RBI games this season.
