SOUTH BEND, IND. - On Saturday, April 3rd, at Frank Eck Stadium in South Bend, Ind., the Villanova baseball team dropped a Big East Conference doubleheader to the 5th ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Wildcats fell to the Irish in game one by the score of 15-7, and lost a heartbreaker in game two, 6-5, in 10 innings. Villanova fell to 17-7-1 overall on the season with the day's two losses. Increasing its win streak to seven games, Notre Dame improved to 21-3 overall and 5-0 in conference action.

Game One:

The Wildcats and starting pitcher Nick Allen got through the first inning of game one with relative ease, but ran into problems in the bottom of the second inning. The Irish got a solo home run by Steve Andres and a three-run shot by Matt Bransfield to key an eight-run second inning. Notre Dame also took advantage of three Villanova errors in the inning, as the Irish scored eight runs on seven hits to take an 8-0 lead.

The Wildcats trailed 10-0 after three innings, but came on in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 10-3. Shortstop Brian Trotta had an RBI single in the inning for Villanova, while Craig Mirsky added an RBI on a fielder's choice.

In the top of the sixth with the `Cats trailing 11-3, Villanova scored three more times to cut the Notre Dame advantage to 11-6. Freshman Alex Bardeguez posted a key pinch-hit two-run single in the inning for the Wildcats. The `Cats appeared ready to cut the lead even further in the sixth with the bases loaded and one out, but Irish 7'1" reliever Ryan Doherty came on in relief and struck out Brian Newbold and Adrian Schau to end the inning.

Notre Dame added four runs in the bottom of the sixth behind a two-run triple by Matt Macri as the Irish pulled away for the 15-7 victory.

Chris Niesel (4-1) earned the win on the mound for the Fighting Irish, allowing six runs (five earned) in five innings. Allen took the loss for the Wildcats to fall to 2-1.

At the plate for Villanova in game one, Trotta went three-for-four with three runs scored and one RBI. For Notre Dame, catcher Javi Sanchez went four-for-four, while Bransfield was two-for-three with a home run and three RBI.

Game Two:

The Wildcats scored first in game two, getting an RBI single by designated hitter Danny Poydenis in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Notre Dame knotted the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning. Sanchez, who was hit by a Mike Loree pitch to reach base, came around to score the tying run later in the inning on a passed ball.

Villanova would regain the advantage in the top of the third inning. With one out, centerfielder Kris Molloy walked to start things off for the `Cats. Molloy stole two straight bases and stood on third base with one out, when Irish starter Tom Thornton uncorked a wild pitch allowing the go-ahead run to score as the Wildcats regained the lead at 2-1.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Notre Dame put three runs on the board to take a 4-2 advantage. The Irish scored twice on wild pitches and once more on a Steve Andreas double to go up by two runs.

A solo home run by Newbold trimmed the ND lead to 4-3 in the top of the sixth, but Notre Dame scored once in the bottom of the inning to push the lead back to two runs.

Down 5-3 heading into the eighth inning, Villanova got some late game magic from Trotta - who came into the series hitting .414 in nine career games versus Notre Dame. After a Schau leadoff walk, Trotta lofted an 0-1 pitch by Irish reliever Joe Thamon over the wall in rightfield for a two-run home run to tie the game at 5-5.

The game would head into extra innings tied at 5-5. The Wildcats appeared primed to take the first lead in extra innings when the Fighting Irish bullpen buckled down. Newbold led off the top of the 10th inning with a double and advanced to third on a Schau sacrifice bunt. With a runner on third and one out, Ryan Doherty put an end to the Wildcat threat, getting Trotta to line to second and catcher Kelly Pickel to bounce to first to end the inning.

With the game still tied in the bottom of the 10th inning, the Fighting Irish made their move. Craig Cooper led the inning off with a walk and advanced to second on a sac bunt. With runners on first and second and one out, Schau came on in relief of right-hander Mike Grodecki. After getting Danny Dressman to fly to center for the second out, Schau had to face the dangerous Macri looking to end the threat. Macri lined a 2-2 pitch to leftfield, plating Cooper with the game-winning run as Notre Dame emerged victorious, 6-5 in 10 innings.

Doherty (2-0) earned the win in relief, while Grodecki took the loss to fall to 2-2.

Trotta and Newbold each went deep in game two for the `Cats, while Macri had two his and the game-winning RBI for the Irish.

Villanova and Notre Dame will wind down the series on Sunday, playing a single game at 12:05 p.m., at Frank Eck Stadium in South Bend, Ind.
