VILLANOVA, PA-- The Villanova baseball team ended its three-game losing streak this afternoon with a 12-4 win over the visiting St. Joseph's Hawks. With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 11-7, while St. Joseph's falls to 10-12-1.
Things started out poorly for Villanova, as the Hawks got back-to-back first inning doubles from Mike DeVincentis and Eric Wyatt which led to two St. Joseph's runs.
Villanova would remain scoreless until the third inning, when the Cats managed six runs on just two hits. Four walks and a hit batsman helped Villanova to the big inning. Senior Rick Welsh registered a two RBI single, while junior Bill Brehm contributed a two-run double.
After St. Joseph's cut the Wildcat lead to 6-4 in the top of the fifth, Villanova rebounded with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth to take a 9-4 advantage. In the three-run fifth, freshman Nick Piantek had an RBI double, while freshman Matt Longo hit his third home run of the year.
On the mound, sophomore Will Henry came on in relief of starter Joe Moore to gain the win and improve to 3-0 on the season. Henry was fantastic, as he pitched five innings, giving up just one hit, while striking out three. St. Joseph's starter Andy Cardamone was credited with the loss.
Villanova will have a busy day in front of them on Wednesday, April 1. Beginning at 3 p.m., Villanova will host Georgetown in a Big East contest. Following the Georgetown game, the Wildcats will travel to Veterans Stadium where they will face Pennsylvania in the first round of the Liberty Bell Classic.
