VILLANOVA, Pa.-- Behind timely hitting and a five-run third inning, the Villanova University baseball team defeated Philadelphia Textile 8-5 on Wednesday, March 15, at McGeehan Field on the campus of Villanova University. With the victory, the Wildcats improved their record to 9-4 on the season.
In the second inning with the game still scoreless, senior Tom Shank got the Wildcats started with a leadoff double. After a sacrifice advanced Shank to third, junior Augie Grove knocked in the first run of the game with an RBI single. With two more RBI, one by junior Pat Kane and the other on a double by freshman Matt Longo, the score stood at 3-0. The 'Cats were not done yet however, as senior Rick Welsh lined a single up the middle scoring two more runs to increase the lead to 5-0 at the end of two innings.
Textile (1-10) fought back with three runs of their own in the third, on RBI's from junior Ryan Andrews and freshman Bill Breining, to cut the lead to 5-3. After Villanova punched another run across the board on an RBI by freshman Dave Pizzini, the Rams struck yet again scoring two runs in the fourth to cut the Wildcat lead to 6-5.
In the eighth inning, however, the Wildcats put the game away scoring two more runs on RBI's by Longo and junior Dan Boublis to increase their lead to 8-5.
Senior Drew Baylor pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings for the save, to preserve the victory for Boublis whose record improves to 3-0 with the win.
Leading the Villanova offensive attack was Welsh and Longo, who each went two-for-five on the day with two RBI. Kane, who came into the game hitting .341 and was second on the team with 14 runs scored, contributed two hits and two runs.
The Wildcats remain at home to resume their schedule, as they host the Temple Owls on Thursday, March 26, at 3 p.m.
