Late Inning Offense Lifts Villanova Over La Salle

Villanova, Pa.--- Hosting La Salle University on Wednesday, March 24, at Richie Ashburn Field in Philadelphia, Pa., the Villanova University baseball team overcame a 2-1 fifth inning deficit to defeat the Explorers 8-2. With the victory, the Wildcats evened their record at 9-9-1 on the season, having gone 7-1-1 in the last nine games.
Down 2-1 in the fifth inning, Villanova got three straight hits including an RBI single from left ielder Dave Pizzini and an RBI double from Joe DelVecchio to pull ahead of the Explorers 4-2. One inning later, a sacrifice fly by centerfielder Mike Perate gave the Wildcats a 5-2 lead.
Villanova would put the game away in the eighth inning scoring three more runs to take a 8-2 victory. With a runner on first and second after a leadoff walk by first baseman Nick Piantek and a single by catcher Dan Glover, freshman third baseman Brendan Mannix hit an RBI single to give the Cats a five-run lead. With two outs and the bases loaded, a single by freshman Rob Cafiero scored two more to seal an 8-2 victory.
Cafiero started and pitched four and two-thirds innings for the Wildcats, giving up one run on three hits, striking out four and walking three. Relieving Cafiero in the fifth and getting the victory for Villanova was Andrew Schwarz, who improves to 1-3. Closer Brian Manning came on in the ninth inning to get his fourth save of the year.
At the plate, Perate went two-for-four with a run scored, two doubles and two RBI. Cafiero was outstanding as well, going two-for-four with a run scored, one double and two RBI.
Villanova will resume play on Thursday, March 25, traveling to New Jersey to face Rider at 3:00 p.m.
