Wildcats Fall to Buffalo, 4-2, in First Game at Spartan Baseball Classic
Feb. 22, 2014
NORFOLK, Va. - Villanova (0-4) was finally able to get underway at the Spartan Baseball Classic on Saturday afternoon following a postponement yesterday and an additional push back this morning. In the first of two games for the day the Wildcats were defeated by Buffalo (2-0), 4-2, at Marty L. Miller Field. Senior center fielder Connor Jones (Chandler, Ariz.) hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning to account for the only Villanova runs after the Bulls plated single runs in four different innings.
Buffalo scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead and that stayed the score until the bottom of the fifth inning as junior starting pitcher Josh Harris (Streamwood, Ill.) got into a groove. Beginning with the fifth inning however, the Bulls scored in three consecutive innings and extended their lead to 4-0 by the time the Wildcats came to the plate in the top of the eighth.
Villanova got just two hits in 7 1/3 innings against Buffalo starting pitcher Anthony Magovney (1-0, 0.00 ERA), who walked two and struck out five. Freshman pinch hitter Brian Trabulsi (Malverne, N.Y.) singled in the eighth inning against reliever Ben Hartz and Jones homered to right field in the ninth after sophomore third baseman Kevin Jewitt (West Chester, Pa.) opened the inning with a single down the right field line.
Harris (0-2, 3.48 ERA) walked none and struck out five in his five innings of work, while being charged with five hits and two earned runs allowed. Freshman reliever Hunter Schryver (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) allowed two runs (one earned) in two innings and redshirt freshman Joe Siringo (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) pitched a perfect eighth inning with a strikeout in his Wildcats debut.
In the bottom of the first inning Joey Topps led off with a double to left-center field and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Mautner, who later added a triple in the fifth inning. Harris retired the first two batters he faced in the fifth before Matt Pollock doubled to left-center and Mautner followed with a triple to the gap in right-center field.
Mike Burke singled to left field against Schryver to open the home half of the sixth inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tanner Robinson. An error committed on the play allowed Robinson to be safe at first and the Bulls manufactured a run on another sacrifice bunt and a run-scoring groundout by Mike Scarcello. In the bottom of the seventh inning Mautner singled with two outs and nobody on ahead of an RBI-double by Thomas Richards.
Sophomore catcher Emmanuel Morris (Willowbrook, Ill.) led off the third inning with an infield hit for the first Villanova hit in the game. Sophomore first baseman Max Beermann (Tampa, Fla.) also had a hit in the game for the Wildcats.
Later in the day Villanova defeated Quinnipiac, 9-3. On Sunday afternoon the Wildcats wrap up the weekend with a 2 p.m. contest against host Norfolk State.
NOTES: Beermann, Jewitt and Jones have each hit safely in all four games this season.
