Villanova Baseball Falls to William & Mary in Season Opener

WILLIAMSBURG, Va.- On Feb. 11 in the season-opener for the Villanova University baseball team, William and Mary hit six home runs and posted 23 hits as they defeated the Wildcats 25-3. With the loss, the `Cats begin the 2000 season at 0-1.

It looked at first as if it might be Villanova's day as Chris McGratty led off the game with a home run off of Tribe starter Robert Jones. Villanova got another run in the inning to take an early 2-0 lead.

After getting a run in the bottom of the first with out the benefit of a hit, William & Mary heated up in the bottom of the second. A single by Charles Wilson followed by Trey Wakefield getting hit by a pitch set up the College's first blast of the day. Chris Clarke deposited a ball over the left field fence and the Tribe had their first lead at 4-2.

William and Mary would score at least one run in every inning. Brendan Harris had a pair of homers, a two-run shot in the fifth and a three-run shot in the sixth. Brian Rogers had a three-run home run in the fourth, while Mike O'Kelly had a solo shot in the sixth en route to a 25-3 win

Villanova's starter, Drew Kirchner, took the loss to fall to 0-1. Jones settled down after the first inning to throw six innings and pick up the win, giving up six hits and three runs while striking out eight.

Leading the Villanova offensive attack was McGratty who went two-for-four with a home run and an RBI. Junior Nick Piantek was two-for-three on the afternoon with an RBI an run scored.

William & Mary and Villanova will play the second game of the series tomorrow, Feb. 12 at 1:00 p.m. at Plumeri Park.
