VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova men's and women's cross country squads are ready for the NCAA Championships on Monday, Nov. 24. The race will be run at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Wabash Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind., and is being hosted by Indiana State.
The No. 7 Villanova women's squad will be running a 6K beginning at 12:08 p.m., followed by the 10K men's race, which will begin at 12:48 p.m.
The Wildcats' earned a berth into the championships by gaining an at-large bid after both squads finished third at the mid-atlantic regional.
The women will be led by senior Frances Koons, who finished first at the regionals. Freshman Bogdana Mimic finished fifth overall. Sophomore Callie Hogan and junior Kaitlyn Tallman also finished in the top 25 as all earned All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors.
"This is what we have worked for all season," head coach Gina Procaccio said. "We're excited to compete. We have a young team out there, only Frances has competed in a national meet, but I am excited to see what we can do. We have been consistently ranked in the top 10 for the past few weeks, so I am looking forward to seeing where we can finish."
The men's squad will be led by sophomore Hugo Beamish, who finished second overall at the mid-atlantic regional. Sophomores Ben Guest and Keith Capecci and junior Daniel Lewis finished in the top 25 to earn All-Mid-Atlantic region honors.
"We want to do better than our ranking going into the meet," head coach Marcus O'Sullivan said. "We will be thrilled with a top 25 finish. As long as we can improve on our standings it will be a good race. We have a young team and this will be a great experience for them."
This is the second consecutive year that the men's team has competed in the national championships. In 2007, the Wildcats finished 25th overall.
