No. 2 Women's Cross Country Heads to NCAA Championships
Nov. 19, 2009 VILLANOVA, Pa. - The No. 2 women's cross country team is set for the 2009 NCAA Championships and is poised to make a run at the title on Monday, Nov. 23. The women will run a 6K beginning at 12:58 p.m. at the La Vern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind. The Wildcats will be led by junior Sheila Reid, who was named Mid-Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year after taking the individual title at the Mid-Atlantic Regional. She also claimed an individual BIG EAST Championship and two other individual titles this season. Head coach Gina Procaccio earned Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year honors after all seven Villanova runners finished in the top-15 at the region meet and earned a spot on the all-region squad. Sheila Reid (1st), Amanda Marino (2nd), Bogdana Mimic (5th), Ali Smith (6th), Kaitlyn Tallman (9th), Nicole Schappert (12th) and Brooke Simpson (15th) were a part of the winning-squad. The Wildcats have won four team titles this season beginning with the Bill Dellinger Invitational, defeating then-No. 2 Oregon. Villanova also won the Panorama Farms Invitational, a second consecutive BIG EAST Championship and the Mid-Atlantic Region title. The Wildcats have spent six consecutive weeks ranked No. 2 nationally.
Last season Villanova finished sixth at the national championships where Marino and Frances Koons earned All-American honors The race will be broadcast live on the VERSUS network. This will mark the first time ever the cross country championship will be broadcast in High Definition. The event can also be seen on VERSUS, a nationally known sports network, which can be seen in over 75 million U.S. homes. This is the third straight year the Division I Cross Country National Championships will be broadcast on live television.
