Sheila Reid Named Mid-Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Junior Sheila Reid was named the Mid-Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Wednesday morning. Head coach Gina Procaccio earned Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year honors.
Reid led the Wildcats at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region, taking the individual title in 20:23. She also claimed her first individual BIG EAST title; the first for Villanova since 2006. Reid has led the squad all season winning individual titles in four races and helping the Wildcats to four team titles.
Procaccio's team topped the region field by 54 points and had three of the top-five runners, five of the top-nine and all seven runners in the top-15. Villanova also won its second consecutive conference title under Procaccio and has spent six straight weeks ranked No. 2 in the country.
The USTFCCCA also released the Mid-Atlantic All-Region squads with 13 Villanova runners making the cut for finishing in the top-25 last weekend.
The women had all seven runners represented on the all-region team; Sheila Reid (1st), Amanda Marino (2nd), Bogdana Mimic (5th), Ali Smith (6th), Kaitlyn Tallman (9th), Nicole Schappert (12th) and Brooke Simpson (15th).
The Wildcats will travel to Terre Haute, Ind. for the 2009 NCAA Championships on Monday, Nov. 23. The men's race will begin at 12:08 p.m. ET, followed by the women's race at 12:58 p.m. ET.
