Nov. 16, 2007
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova's Bobby Curtis has been named the 2007 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mid-Atlantic Region Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Year. The senior sensation has been a consistent dominant force throughout the fall claiming four individual titles and setting three new course records, along with surpassing his previous 8k personal best of 23:24.
Curtis kicked off his senior season by easily taking first place at the local Haverford Meet with a time of 19:16.50, shattering the previous record held on that respective course. He continued to showcase his talents at the highly competitive Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. in late September. Curtis claimed an individual title, led the Wildcats to an overall first place finish, and set a new course record with a time of 23:39, placing him among some of the nation's elite runners.
With half the season complete, Curtis was just getting started. He went on to place an extremely impressive second at the renowned Pre-NCAA Meet hosted by Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind. Despite marginally missing the victory, Curtis broke his previous 8k time by posting a 23:09.4 in the Men's Blue Race. He then got an opportunity to compete in front of a hometown crowd as he, along with his fellow teammates, traveled to Louisville, Ky. in an attempt to capture the BIG EAST Championship title. Curtis, once again, posted an outstanding performance by claiming the individual conference title and setting a new personal best, as well as course record at the E.P. `Tom' Sawyer State Park with a blazing time of 23:08.85, all while leading the Wildcats to an overall sixth place finish.
Most recently, the senior standout clinched a first place victory at the Mid-Atlantic Regional meet to secure the Wildcats a second place finish, as well as a trip to the NCAA finals scheduled for Monday, Nov. 19, in Terre Haute, Ind.
